My "Shelter in Place" COVID poem
(Written April 20, 2020)

I’m really liking this time…
except of course for all the deaths,
and the actual experience of having the virus itself
which at its worst sounds horrific
and the undercurrent of fear and anxiety
and all those who are suffering economically
and all the businesses that had to shut
and the world’s (not just our) economies' future in question
and the various struggles that people are having in this experience
(be it financial, emotional, physical, spiritual, etc)
and the inequities of all those struggles…
and not being able to get out into deep nature (god, I miss deep nature!!)
and not being able to hug friends or gather in groups
and any and all of the fall-out from “stay at home”
(though I do appreciate that “stay at home” is working).
EXCEPT FOR ALL THAT STUFF…
I’m really liking the quiet.
And I don’t just mean the reduction of noise,
though there is that.
I mostly mean the energetic quiet.
The energy of the hustle and bustle
of the urgency of the busyness
of the want want want
of the do do do
of the hurry up and get it done
All that incessant hyper-forward momentum
has practically stopped.
There are few people out and about.
There are few cars.
There are few airplanes!
Public transpiration has cut way back on frequency.
Those who are out for a walk
are doing so more in a state of just “being” in the walk
instead of a focused “I gotta get there five minutes ago!”
or “Hurry up and get your poop done, dog!”
There is so much fucking calm energy in this moment.
As a sensitive being, my body picks up on the energy all around me.
My body is so happy right now!
That’s why I’m really liking this time…
